Mapping EU Funding Opportunities for Cancer Care in Greece

A comprehensive analysis of European funding mechanisms for cancer, with strategic recommendations to strengthen Greece's engagement and unlock new resources for cancer prevention, treatment, and research.
The Challenge
Despite the ambition of the European Beating Cancer Plan and the availability of over €3 billion in EU funding for cancer-related initiatives, Greece's participation in these programmes remains limited. The country lacks an updated national cancer action plan and a structured mechanism to systematically identify, pursue, and leverage available funding opportunities.
Our Approach
We conducted an extensive mixed-methods study combining a systematic literature review, an algorithmic analysis of over 71,000 EU-funded projects using Python and NLP techniques, and semi-structured interviews with 12 Greek experts. Findings were synthesized into an interactive dashboard enabling decision-makers to explore funding landscapes, track Greece's participation, and identify priority opportunities across EBCP categories. The study delivered actionable strategic recommendations for maximizing the country's engagement with cancer-related funding streams.
